The Sages say eclipses are a ban sign for idol worshippers, and anyone in the path of the eclipse. Rabbi Meir says, it's also a warning for the Jewish people to do TeShuva.
Rabbi Reuven also brings an amazing proof from Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger to refute those that say eclipses are a predictable phenomena, therefore there's no reason to worry. HaShem created the universe and set everything in motion knowing the actions of all the generations until the end of time, and He calculated the orbits of the heavens to align to create eclipses during times when the generation was wicked and deserves punishment.
