Parashat Shoftim: Like All The Nations

Rabbi Yaron Reuven brings an important lesson from Parashat Shoftim on an ideology that has plagued the Jewish people for millennia: Let us be like the nations. Rav Elchonon Wasserman says, this desire to be like the nations and secular Jewish leadership that does not follow the Torah is the main reason for the long exile. In this weeks Parasha Moshe Rabbeinu says, in the future Am Yisrael will ask for a king, "like the nations that are around me." But Moshe Rebukes them and says the king must be "from your brothers," meaning the king must follow the Torah, not his own ideas to be a politician or like the kings the gentiles have.
