Rabbi Yaron Reuven issues a warning against Ayahuasca retreats and the very real danger of quick spiritual highs. Despite the serious dangers of psychosis and worse, Ayahuasca has become very popular, even within the Jewish community. At least one ayahuasca retreat was shut down for wrongful death of one of their victims, but unfortunately more keep popping up.
The Torah forbids taking mind altering substances, and the deaths and mental illness that often result from these "quick fixes" prove the Torah is always right. Rabbi Reuven emphasizes that anyone looking for a short cut to spiritual success or connection to HaShem is only in for a disappointment. Any spiritual boost or peace of mind that a person may feel after using psychedelic drugs is short lived and only an illusion. In many cases people looking for a salvation to their problems through these drugs only find a living Gehinnom.
