Many people treat mussar—ethical discipline and character development—as something nice to do when they have time. They learn halachah, they study Chumash, they fulfill mitzvot, and then maybe, if there's time left over, they'll look at a mussar book.

You meet someone who speaks softly, lowers his eyes, and tells you, "I don't know much about business." Then, within the same breath, he mentions the thirty-million-dollar deal he signed last week. Or the person who says, "Oh, I don't know anything," but immediately asks if you saw her new book. This is not humility. This is fake humility—and it may be the most dangerous form of arrogance.
